CORE PILLARS I

Purpose: Conceptual foundations

Behavior: Each pillar links into specific story sections (anchors), not whole pages

Homepage · Section 3 — Core Pillars, preserving your original conceptual logic while aligning it with how the site now actually functions (anchors over pages, narrative flow, visitor clarity).

I. CORE PILLARS

Homepage · Section 3

Purpose:

Establish the conceptual foundations of The Webber Chronicle—the moral, legal, and geographic forces that shaped the family story.

Behavior:

Each pillar links to specific anchored sections within stories, not to entire pages.

This allows visitors to enter the narrative at meaning, not chronology alone.

⸻⸻⸻⸻

PILLAR I — Early Life & Moral Foundation

Theme:

Formation before Texas; conscience before law.

This pillar introduces the lives and values shaped before borders hardened—where personal ethics preceded formal statutes.

Family formation under shifting regimes.

This pillar centers the deliberate choices made inside—and against—Spanish, Mexican, Texian, and U.S. legal systems.

IMPLEMENTATION NOTES (Squarespace)

• Place Jump-to menu directly under the page title

• Use a Text block (not Markdown) if Squarespace strips brackets

• IDs must be manually set on section headers or spacer blocks

• Avoid sticky headers overlapping anchors (add top padding if needed)

———⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻

Here’s exactly where to place the Jump-to menus on each page in Squarespace, with step-by-step instructions that work in Squarespace 7.1.

⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻

Step-by-step: Place a Jump-to menu on a long page

1) Open the page in editor

1. Go to Pages (left panel).

2. Click the page you’re editing (e.g., Law and Love: Defiance Across Three Rivers).

3. Click Edit.⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻

2) Place the Jump-to menu in the correct location

The Jump-to menu should live immediately under the page title area, before the first paragraph.

Correct placement order (top of page):

1. Page Title / Hero section (if you have one)

2. Subtitle (optional)

3. Jump-to menu (this goes here)

4. Intro paragraph / epigraph / first section

⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻

3) Add a content block for the Jump-to menu

You have two safe options.

Option A (recommended): Text block

1. Hover under the title area until you see Add Block.

2. Click Add Block → Text.

3. Paste the Jump-to menu text.

4. Highlight each label (e.g., “Introduction”).

5. Click the link icon.

6. In the link field, type the anchor only, like:

#introduction

7. Click Save.

Best reliability in Squarespace.

Option B: Markdown block

Use this only if your template supports Markdown cleanly.

1. Add Block → Markdown

2. Paste the Jump-to menu exactly.

3. Click Save.

If Markdown doesn’t render links correctly, use Option A.

Step-by-step: Make the anchor targets work (the most important part)

Your Jump-to menu links won’t work unless each target exists on the page.

4) Add the anchor ID at the target section

Squarespace doesn’t always let you add an ID directly to a heading. The most reliable method is to use a Spacer block as the anchor marker.

For each section you want to jump to:

1. Scroll to the section (example: your Introduction heading).

2. Insert a Spacer block directly above that heading:

• Hover above the heading → Add Block → Spacer

3. Click the Spacer to edit its settings.

4. In the Spacer settings panel, find Advanced → ID (or Block ID).

5. Enter the exact locked ID, without the #

Example: introduction

6. Save.

✅ Repeat for each anchor target.

Placement rules (so it looks uniform across the site)

5) Use the same layout container every time

To keep every story page consistent:

• Put the Jump-to menu inside the same section width as your body text

(usually “Narrow” or a centered column).

• Keep it as a single line separated by dots (·) like we formatted.

Page-by-page placement instructions

Below is where the Jump-to menu goes, per page, and where the anchor IDs go.

Law and Love: Defiance Across Three Rivers

Jump-to menu placement:

Immediately under the title/subtitle area, above your first paragraph.

Anchor placements:

Add Spacer IDs above these headings:

• Introduction → introduction

• The Mississippi → the-mississippi

• The Colorado → the-colorado

• The Rio Grande → the-rio-grande

• After the Rivers → after-the-rivers

• Footnotes → footnotes

• Sources → sources

The Inheritor: John Ferdinand Webber & the Conscience of a Frontier

Jump-to menu placement: under title, above epigraph.
